Passing on Excellence, Building Our Future

The nuclear sector relies on specialist knowledge and experience that’s been developed over decades. As part of the Nuclear Skills Plan, we're creating pathways for industry experts to share their knowledge with the next generation.

Why We Need You

Our sector faces a significant challenge: we need to recruit an additional 40,000 skilled workers by 2030 to support the UK's nuclear ambitions. This means we need to dramatically increase our training capacity.

Who better to train the nuclear workforce of tomorrow than the experts of today?

The Programme

The Sector Experts into Training programme is designed to attract and retain industry professionals in teaching and training roles across further education colleges, training providers and universities.

We're developing a nationally branded initiative that will:

  • Create flexible pathways for experts to move into teaching, either full-time or alongside their current roles
  • Provide training and support for industry experts to become effective educators
  • Connect training providers with nuclear professionals who have valuable knowledge to share
  • Ensure critical technical knowledge is preserved and passed down

Benefits for Organisations

For nuclear employers, supporting your experienced staff to participate in the programme can:

  • Strengthen your relationships with local training providers
  • Help develop training that truly meets industry needs
  • A clear and accountable route for creation, measurement and claim of Social Value
  • Create more skilled potential recruits for your future workforce
  • Provide rewarding development opportunities for your experienced staff

Benefits for Industry Experts

For nuclear professionals considering a teaching role, the programme offers:

  • The chance to leave a lasting legacy by training the next generation
  • New challenges and career development in the later stages of your career
  • Flexible options to suit your circumstances
  • The satisfaction of giving back to the industry you've helped build
  • Continued connection to the nuclear community

Why This Matters

The nuclear sector requires specialised knowledge that often takes years to develop. By creating pathways for our most experienced professionals to move into teaching roles, we're ensuring that valuable expertise isn't lost when people leave the industry.

This programme is a key part of how we'll build the training capacity needed to meet our ambitious workforce targets while maintaining the high standards of excellence the UK nuclear sector is known for.
